Five Generations of Hard Work and Heart at Cascadia Malt

Five Generations of Farming, One Legacy of Exceptional Malt

The McKay family has been farming in Washington since the 1800's. Five generations of hard work, stewardship and a deep respect for the land have shaped the foundation of Cascadia Malts.

Award-Winning Malt. One Remarkable Legacy.

Great malt begins in the fields, and for Cascadia Malts, that story goes back to the 1800s. For five generations, the McKay family has cultivated farmland in Washington's Grand Coulee Dam region, growing quality grains while honoring their family's agricultural heritage.

That dedication continues to earn recognition! At the 2025 Craft Malt Awards in Denver, featuring 130 entries from seven countries, Cascadia Malts received:

  • Silver Award – Claymore Pilsner Malt

  • Bronze Award – Distillers Malt

The success extends to their brewing partners, too! In 2024, Spokane's Humble Abode Brewing earned Gold for Washington State Hazy IPA of the Year, using exclusively Cascadia Malts.

From family-grown grain to award-winning craft beverages, Cascadia Malts is a celebration of farming heritage, quality, and local partnerships.

Rooted in Five Generations of Farming

For Cascadia Malts, great malt begins with a family legacy dating back to the 1800s. Nestled in Washington State's Grand Coulee Dam region, the McKay family's farmland has been passed down through five generations. Today, the fourth and fifth generations continue that tradition, growing quality grains, including heritage varieties, with the same dedication and respect for the land that started it all.

Five generations, one family farm, and a passion for exceptional grain.

Cascadia Malts - Rooted in Family, Connected to Community

Cascadia Malts is a locally owned, family-operated business dedicated to producing high-quality malt from grain grown on their own family farm and by neighboring farmers throughout the region. Built on generations of farming experience and a commitment to the land, Cascadia Malts connects local and regional grain growers with the breweries and distilleries that bring their harvests to life. By bridging the gap between farms and craft beverage producers, they help strengthen the local agricultural economy while ensuring that quality, traceability, and community remain at the heart of every batch.

Family is at the heart of everything we do: For Corey and Melissa Freuen, raising three beautiful, energetic children in Nine-Mile Falls, Washington, while building Cascadia Malts is truly a family affair. Behind them stands a remarkable circle of support, parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, and generations of family who have rolled up their sleeves, stepped in when needed, and helped turn a shared vision into reality. They say it takes an army to build something great. At Cascadia Malts, it takes a big family, a whole lot of grit, and an unwavering belief in what they're building together. Because at the end of the day, the strongest roots aren't just in the soil- they're in family.
