The Inland Northwest around Spokane mixes dryland grain country with small farms close to town. Spokane County had 2,386 farms in the 2022 Census of Agriculture. Wheat covered about 156,600 acres, followed by hay and forage, canola and lentils. Kootenai County, Idaho, which includes Coeur d'Alene, had 968 farms, with hay as its largest crop by acres. Direct sales are still small in both counties. Only about 10 percent of farms sold directly to consumers. That leaves room for households in Spokane, Spokane Valley, Nine Mile Falls and Coeur d'Alene to buy straight from a grower. Farmers markets there run mainly from May to October. Buying direct shortens the trip from field to table. It also lets you ask the person who raised your food how they raised it.
