Local farms on O'ahu

Buy direct from 3 producers on O'ahu, with 12 products listed today.

O'ahu is Hawai'i's most populous island, yet its farms are small and varied. The 2022 Census of Agriculture counted 1,002 farms in Honolulu County, which covers O'ahu. Seventy-four percent of them sit on 1 to 9 acres. Vegetables, melons and potatoes brought in about $69 million in sales, the most of any Hawai'i county. Poultry and eggs added about $16.9 million, also first in the state. Ninety-one percent of farms are family operations, and 23 percent sell directly to consumers. Statewide, local farmers supply over 75 percent of tomatoes, sweet potatoes, cucumbers and sweet corn. Even so, the state imports about 85 to 90 percent of its food, which leaves shelves exposed to shipping disruptions. Buying direct from an O'ahu farm keeps more of each dollar on the island. It also shortens the trip from field to table and helps small farms stay in business.

Questions

Where can I buy local food on O'ahu?
The Hawai'i Farm Bureau runs four O'ahu farmers markets. KCC meets Saturday mornings, Mililani Sunday mornings, Honolulu (Blaisdell Center) Wednesday evenings, and Kailua Town Center Thursday evenings. Farm Lovers runs Saturday markets at Kaka'ako and Pearlridge. FarmToYou also lists local producers you can buy from directly.
What is in season in Hawai'i in winter?
By the University of Hawai'i CTAHR seasonality guide, avocado peaks November through February, and oranges run September through April. Tangerines peak November to January, atemoya in November and December, and rambutan from October to March. Strawberries peak January to April, and sweet corn peaks in November and December and again February to June.
When is mango season in Hawai'i?
CTAHR lists March through November as peak season for mango, with the same window for papaya. Lychee peaks May to September, banana June to October, and pineapple April to September. The guide was last revised in 2010, and peak timing shifts by island, elevation and variety.
Why does buying local food matter in Hawai'i?
Hawai'i is about 2,506 miles from the mainland, and a state planning document says roughly 85 to 90 percent of its food is imported. That makes supply vulnerable to shipping disruptions. The same document estimates that replacing just 10 percent of imported food would keep about $313 million in the state economy.
