Hawai'i Island, the Big Island, is the state's largest farming county. The 2022 Census of Agriculture counted 3,638 farms and about $290 million in sales. Fruits, tree nuts and berries brought in about $97 million, the most of any county, and coffee covered 5,472 acres. The island also leads the state in cattle and aquaculture sales. The state imports about 85 to 90 percent of its food. Buying direct from a Big Island grower keeps money in local hands.
